About

Maçanet de la Selva Secondary School is located in the south-west province of Girona bordering Barcelona. Historically, Maçanet de la Selva was an outstanding town in the area near Vidreres, Sils, Massanes, Fogars, Lloret or Blanes among others. During the 19th century, countryhouses were owned by wealthy people from Blanes and in the late 20th century local economy has become at standstill. Important public works such as high speed train, motorway or main road have been a boost for the town.
The town is inhabited in a very irregular way between the town centre and residential areas which can reach a great deal of population. Squatting sometimes takes place. In general town is scattered and people concentrated in some residential areas have a lack of public transport (just running twice a day, morning and afternoon service).
Referring to the socio-economic status of the families in Maçanet de la Selva, we must point out:
a) The educational attainment of the families: 9.8% of people cannot write neither read, indeed they have not got any studies. 15.19% of people only have primary education. The bulk of the population, 40.02% of people have secondary studies. 10.54% of people have got A levels and 12.39% some Vocational Studies. Just 4.32% of people have University Certificate and 5.82% of people have Bachelor Degree or PhD.
b) Socio-economic level: the population in April 2017 is 6,819 registered as resident and unemployment rate is 15.74% (April 2017). Around 700 unemployed people and 400 of them receive some unemployment or social allowance. Around 44 families receive income support benefits and 32 families have enrolled students in our Secondary School.
c) Origins: April 2017, population is 6,819 as registered residents, 843 are newcomers (12.83% ) and the largest nationalities are Romanian, Chinese, Gambian, up to thirty different nationalities. Furthermore, 1,329 inhabitants are coming from other parts of Spain (outside Catalonia) and it means a high effort and support for Catalan language to become a cohesive language and which, at the same time, is giving an opportunity to enrich from multiculturalism.
Consequently, Maçanet de la Selva Secondary School is within the highest tough school categories because of the social disadvantaged environments and it takes an important number of the gypsy community.
Maçanet de la Selva Secondary School is a young, Catalan, state school which opened just 9 years ago and it is willing to become an outstanding center in the town. Nowadays, the staff consists of 33 teachers along with 3 administrative staff and 262 students between 12 and 18 years old.
We follow the philosophy of LEC (Catalan Educative Law) and the goal of our school is to provide students with the suitable education in order to:
a) achieve personal and social development and self-autonomy related to emotion’s management.
b) develop the correct level as a way of knowledge and thinking as well as expression and personal, social and cultural key competences.
We would like to become an important educative reference school in order to train local teenagers who study here as well as an information reference center, teaching Secondary compulsory studies in town. One of our goals in the management of the school program is to improve social ties and reduce school absenteeism as well as reduce school drop-outs through suitable orientation towards families and students and create clear formative choices; similarly, we work on school coexistence and participation in the school.
The school already participated in the ERASMUS KA3 project MEDIS and CHOICE, in which social incusion objectives and STEAM promotional education have been achieved.
