Spirulina is a blue-green spiral-shaped micro-alga. It has been discovered in lakes in various equatorial regions of the world such as India, Chad and Mexico. Spirulina is a cyanobacterium belonging to the genus Arthrospira. Often, two genus names are found for this alga. These are : Spirulina and Arthrospira. The two most common species are Spirulina (Arthrospira) maxima and Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis.
